What is the Foyle Down's Syndrome Trust?
Foyle Down's Syndrome Trust was formed in 1995 to promote development of a culture which would encourage and enable children with Down's Syndrome to live full, independent and productive lives.
We took our inspiration for our project from Professor Sue Buckley, Director of the Sarah Duffen Centre, Portsmouth. Professor Buckley has over 30 years' experience in researching and working with people with Down's Syndrome.
Initially the Trust tutored children with Down's Syndrome aged 0-10 years on a one-to-one basis in the home. This helps develop their language and communication skills whilst at the same time providing parents with the skills and knowledge to support the development of their child. Our current base covering the Derry City Council area was set up in March 1998. We now have a staff of five employed by the Trust.

- Home Visits for young people aged 11-16 years
- Social activities for children and young people aged 5-25 years
- Parents support group
- Workshops for parents and professionals
Like Professor Sue Buckley, we believe that, with the right support and encouragement, children with Down's Syndrome can be enabled to lead full and productive lives.
